being comfortable...

Are you comfortable at work?  I'm not talking about what you do and how long you've been there... I'm asking; is your seat comfortable?  Does your back or neck hurt at work?

I was in a car accident about 4 years ago and ever since then I have had neck and back pain.  Never really thought too much about it, crack my neck and back every once in a while and it made it feel better.  At work now, the pain seems to be more consistent and often.  So, I've been doing my own research.... Check out the picture below...

So based on the diagram above, you should be sitting like that at work to promote better posture and better blood flow... Are you?  Is your monitor set at eye level?  Are your thighs parallel to the ground, arms 90 degrees, butt all the way back in the chair?  More importantly, do you find yourself slouching over to your desk?

All of these things can cause you pain.  What I'd really like to know is who actually has a workstation set up like that picture and where do you work?!  Most organizations, you get a desk, chair, computer and off you go.  Out of my research, I've learned that every 30mins, I need to get up and walk somewhere even if its to get water or to the bathroom.

Check out the  stuff I have been reading and how you can make your setup at work more comfortable...

Small Businesses being HACKED!

Has your company every been hacked?  Have you ever thought about it before?  The risks, dangers, what you click on, what site you visit?  Think you're too small of a company for anyone to want to come after you?  THINK AGAIN!

Hackers are now targeting small to mid-size companies because the borders of their network are less likely to be efficient enough to keep out the most intelligent virus, worm, mal-ware, spy-ware out of their network.  It's also a low-profile hack for these "geeks."  They don't get as much attention as they would from a state-of-the-art system from the likes of Lockheed Martin or SAIC.

What type of impact could this have on your business?  Like most businesses, you deal with consumers or clients.  One way or another, you will be receiving payment from that client for products or services rendered, at which point you will have financial information.  Once you've been hacked, all your client's information is at risk, which is no good for them, but even worse for you as you were the party responsible.  See how bad this can get?

Take a look at these articles.  They have some examples of small businesses that have already experienced the worst.

Facebook...

ok, I just had to post something about this article I read about Facebook.  (shot out to Bernie Berns for the site)

It is estimated that 600,000 user logins are being compromised every day?!?! Has your FB got hacked?

I mean, you have apps that are directly linked to FB, some that require you to log in first to use it, people log in from work (ahem some of my friends), mobile devices, etc... cyber security is a big threat. Ever wonder why FB is blocked at your work?... because of this! Systems are vulnerable each second of the day...

Our lives are dependent on the internet, which lures people to surf, which opens gateways to vulnerability... Do you have anti-virus? a sound firewall? do you even know what it these things are and their purpose? might want to find out... your computer, your network, your business can be "compromised"

something personal, somewhat to do with work...

So, last Thursday I am at work... doing work, of course... I'm talking to a potential client about his firm and their IT needs.  I give him my pitch, tell him what we do, how we can become their IT support department and take the technology burden off them.  He's somewhat interested, but of course, in this day and age they already have a vendor they work with (because there is maaadd competition).  Anyway, he starts asking me questions and much is technical, for the most part I know what he is talking about and have rebuttals, but after our conversation it dawned on me...

I need to go back to school! And not only do I need to get my Bachelors but I want to get my Masters too! Very odd, especially the fact that I have been putting school off for the longest time, not wanting to go, not feeling like I need to, but now I WANT to and go longer than I have to. I've made the decision to go back beginning in 2012 and I'm excited about it. Going to major in Info Systems, concentration in Info Systems Security.  I even know I want my Masters in Business with a concentration in Network Management. Not only will I be learning things I've always had a love for, I'll be able to put it to great use right here at eGuard. I'll be better equipped to go toe-to-toe with CTOs, CIOs, Directors of IT, etc...

January 2012... just bring it...

favorite source for technology reading...

The internet makes it possible to get information from all over the world.  There are a billion sites out there, blogs, social networking, .com, .net, etc... What site do you go to commonly for news and information about new technology?  Which one's do you trust?

Here are some of my favorites:

Going into my second month...

I started working here on September 12th, 2011.  This is what I love, the IT space, computer services, technology, hardware, software, etc... Anything technology related!  I'm the Business Development Manager here, basically what I do is generate new business (my fancy way of saying I do SALES).

Into my second week, closed my first deal!  Granted the lead came in over the internet, but I did follow up and go through every phase of the sales cycle.  Since then, though, it has been rather rough.  Getting in touch with prospects and setting appointments, not so easy.  Sales is a numbers game though, right?  Keep plugging away and there will be some Yes-es along the way, more No-s.

Yesterday, I went on two appointments all by myself, with no help.  Felt good about both of them too.  I didn't stumble, stutter or feel intimidated.  I went in, did my "30 second elevator pitch" and talked the talk.  Now hopefully, something comes of either...
